Week of March 16-18

This week in Kindergarten...

This week we learned about the letter D. We practiced the letter sound and writing the letter D by participating in a letter D write the room. Ask me what words begin with the letter D. 

We also celebrated St. Patrick's Day by reading How to Catch a Leprechaun and meeting Larry the Leprechaun! He sure loved to talk about his gold! We also completed a visual journal prompt that said "If I found a pot of gold I would..." by drawing a picture and labelling it.



We ended the week by reading the story The Dark by Robert Munsch and showed our story comprehension by drawing and labelling the beginning, middle and end of the story. Ask me to tell you all about it!

Week of March 9-13

 This week in Kindergarten...

We started this week by learning about the letter "H" and the sound it makes. In our visual journals we made hide and seek hippo houses out of the letter H. Inside we hid a hippo and two other things that begin with the letter H. We worked on labelling our pictures. 


We also introduced the letter "U" and talked about the two sounds a U can make. We read the story Over and Under the Snow and talked about the different animals that live over and under the snow during the winter season. We continued working on problem solving using those winter animals and solved a math problem in our math journals using pictures and numbers. 


We read the story Be Who You Are and It's Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr and worked on drawing self-portraits. We talked about adding detail to our pictures and making them look like our real selves! We can't wait for you to see them during conferences next week!


We a story about hibernating animals, drew pictures of animals that hibernate and labelled those pictures. Ask me about which animals hibernate.


Important Dates to Remember:

TUESDAY next week Kindergarten will preview the book fair and will not be bringing home a new library book. Please continue to return any library books prior to Spring Break.

Week of March 2-6

This week in Kindergarten....

We began this week learning about the letter "B" and the sound it makes. We read a story called Bubble Bear and brainstormed words that begin with the letter B. We also had a bubble surprise!

We started our learning about bears. We talked about fiction versus non-fiction books and how we can tell which type of book is which. We then did a guided scientific drawing of a bear and labelled different parts of the bear.



In math, we read the story Bear Snores On and used the animals in the story to begin our work in problem solving. We used whiteboards and unifix cubes to practice our problems together for a few days. We will work on problem solving in our math journals next week.

Week of February 23-26


 Check out our amazing dragon we created with the PM class for Lunar New Year!


This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about the letter "K." We read a K story, practiced the sound it makes, as well as practiced printing the letter K by doing a K sort. 



We celebrated Pink Shirt Day by joining the Kindness Club. We read the story The Kindness Book by Todd Parr and learned how to have a conversation with our friends about ways that we can show kindness. We each made a pink shirt that shows a way that we can be kind.


In math, we read the story 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews. We used 10 black dots to make our own picture that we added to a class book. We also tried sounding out the word of what we made.

Week of February 17-20

 This week in Kindergarten...

With winter weather back in full force, please remember to dress for the weather. We will continue to go outside as weather permits. It's also really important to keep practicing doing up zippers, etc. to build independence. 

Our letter this week was the letter "L." We read a story about the letter L, practiced writing it on whiteboards, as well as our fine motor journals. We brainstormed words that begin with the letter L, drew some pictures and copied the words that go with each one. Some of us even tried to sound out some of the words on our own! 



We also learned about Lunar New Year - it is the year of the Fire Horse! We drew pictures about what we learned about Lunar New Year and practiced our labelling skills too! Ask me some things I learned about Lunar New Year. 



In math, we have finally arrived a representing the number 10! We practiced representing the number 10 in the different ways we have been working on independently - including making tally marks all on our own. We nailed it!

Week of February 9-11

 This week in Kindergarten...

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

We began this week learning about the letter V for Valentine's Day. We practiced the sound the letter v makes, as well as identifying words that begin with the letter v. 

We also did a guided drawing of a love bug and wrote the word Valentine underneath it.




We ended Valentine's Day week with reading some different Valentine's Day books, as well as doing a journal writing activity where we drew and labelled things we love. We are working on recording the sounds we hear in our words - aiming for a beginning and an ending sound to each word.

Week of February 2-6

This week in Kindergarten....

We started the week by learning about the letter "G' and the sound it makes. We practiced printing the both upper and lower case G's on the whiteboard. Then we sorted pictures into words that begin with G and ones that do not. 


Keeping with our letter G theme, we learned about groundhogs and read a story about Groundhog Day. We also made a groundhog craft that we took home.

Next we learned about the number 9. We represented 9 in a variety of ways.


We also practiced our story comprehension by reading the story The Missing Mitten Mystery and drew pictures for the beginning and ending of the story. We also began labelling our pictures using the letter sounds we know. Ask me what happened in our story this week.
