January 5-9

 This week in Kindergarten....

Happy New Year kindergarten families! I hope that everyone had a great winter break. It was so lovely to be back together once again this week. This week we learned about the letter "w." We practiced writing the capital and lower case w, we practiced making the sound, and brainstormed different words that start with the letter w. Ask me what some words are that begin with a W!

We also talked about WINTER (and winter starts with a w too). We read a story about winter and drew what we see in winter.

In math, we practiced making the number 6 and represented it in four different ways in our math journals.

We then read 6 Sticks and used 6 popsicle sticks to create our pictures. We made cats, dogs, clubhouses, rockets, fishes, monsters and flower gardens!

We had so much fun this week! We had caroling in the gym, we wore our pjs to school, and we listened to soooooo many Christmas stories. We reviewed all the letters and numbers we have already learned so that we can be ready to add to our knowledge when we get back to school in January. Finally, we worked all week on a gift for our families! We hope you like it!

Thank-you so much to the families who brought me in a Christmas gift. It was unexpected and very much appreciated. I feel so lucky.

What a busy week in Kindergarten! We started the week learning about the letter "C." Ask me what sound a C makes. We practiced printing the letter C in our fine motor journals and then drew a candy cane with a pattern to go with it. We also learned how to make a candy cane out of a paper square and smelly markers.

We continued our learning about patterns by reading some pattern stories, going for a pattern hunt in the school, as well as making paper pattern chains we hung in the classroom.

Next we read two different versions of the story The Gingerbread Man. We did a sequencing activity in our visual journal, as well as a drawing activity about our favourite parts. Ask me what my favourite part of the story was.

Week of December 1-5

 This week in Kindergarten...

This week we said "See you later" to Miss V, our student teacher. She will be returning to us once again in March. We will all miss her dearly and will be so excited to have her back once again.

This week learned about the number 5. We practiced writing it on whiteboards and then represented the number 5 in different ways in our math journals. We also learned about the letters "S" and "I". We practiced writing them on whiteboards, as well as our fine motor journals. We wrote as many as we could and circled our very favourite one.

We also talked about our favourite things to do in the snow and drew a picture in our visual journal. Ask me what my favourite thing to do in the snow is!

We also created beautiful snowflakes using painters tape to make the snowflake and then used water colour paint to paint over top. After the paint dried, we peeled off the tape to see our beautiful snowflakes!

Week of November 17-21

We played in all sorts of weather this week. It is important, now that the weather is colder, that we come to school dressed to go outside. Please keep practicing with your child on getting winter ready independently. Please practice getting on jackets, zippers, snowpants, hats and mittens can be while at home. Thanks so much!

This week in Kindergarten...

I want to welcome Miss V to our classroom. She is a student teacher from St. Mary's University. Miss V will be with our class from now until December 4th. Miss V will return to our classroom once again in the spring. We are so excited to have her be a part of our classroom community.

This was a busy full week in kindergarten. This we jumped right into learning about new letters and numbers. We have been working hard on practicing the letters "T" and "F." We can identify words that begin with those letters. We practiced writing them in the air, on whiteboards and our fine motor journals. In our visual journals we drew mystery animals hidden behind a flap. We had to make good guesses about its peeking out tail for the letter T!

We also learned about the number 3. We practiced printing the number 3 on whiteboards using our rhyme: "Around the tree, around the tree, that is how you make a 3!" In our math journals we showed the number 3 in many different ways - pictures, a number line and a ten frame.

We also enjoyed some new toys during centre time - building with Minecraft blocks, kinetic sand, robots, Lego and paint.

 This week in Kindergarten...

It was a very short week for us! Mrs. Bitz's classes joined together with Mrs. Rupert's classes to engage in an apple taste test. We used our senses to 4 different types of apples and then graph our favourite one. Ask me which kind of apple I liked the best.

We also learned about the number 2 - different ways to make two, what is a matching pair and learned a sock memory matching game. Students brought their game home to play with family.
