I can't believe that our year is almost over and that we only have one more week together. Please ensure that you have read our Kindergarten Celebration email. We are looking forward to all the fun events we have next week.

June 8-12

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week saying good-bye to our ducks and our goose, Johnny Marshmallow. We drew ducks and geese and made a Thank-You book for the farmer who so kindly gave our classes eggs to hatch. Our ducks and Johnny went back to the farm to live their best farm life. 

We read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and solved this math problem in our math journals: The Hungry Caterpillar ate 10 things, what kinds of things did he eat? Students used pictures, numbers and a math sentence to solve their problems. 

Next, we read the story Jack and the Beanstalk. We used our imaginations to think about what we might find at the top of a beanstalk. Students drew a picture and labelled their drawings. We had so many interesting ideas! 

We continued by reading a different version of Jack and the Beanstalk and participating in a "Measure the Room" activity where students used unfix cubes to measure and record different pictures around the room from the story.

June 1-5

 This week in Kindergarten...

The AM class began the week learning about vowels. We reviewed the two sounds vowels make and used our vowel knowledge to complete CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. The PM class looked at photos from our field trip last week and drew and labelled a picture of their favourite things about our visit to the Calgary Farmyaard.

We read the story The 3 Billy Goats Gruff. We made puppets of the characters from the story and practiced our story telling by acting it out as a whole group, and also in partners. We even made our own 3D shape bridges for the troll to cross from a variety of materials found in our classroom. We also completed a sequencing activity and shared our retelling of the story to Mrs. Bitz. Ask me to tell you the story of The 3 Billy Goats Gruff!

Library is now over for the year. Please return all library books back to the school next week so we can begin a final inventory to end the school year.

Week of May 25-29

 This week in Kindergarten...

The AM class began the week by journaling about our field trip last week to the Calgary Farmyard. 

The PM class began the week by practicing the vowels and the sounds they make by reading a story, singing a song and doing some work on our whiteboards.

Next, we read the story The 3 Little Pigs and practiced sequencing the story by cutting out pictures and putting them in order. Each student then retold the story to Mrs. Bitz to practice their retelling skills.

We also read the story The 3 Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark. We talked about what was the same between the two stories and what was different. We then built houses for our 3 little pigs with different building materials. Students had to make their houses strong enough to withstand the "Big Bad Hair Dryer!" Some houses were successful, some had their piggies blow away!

Students then had the opportunity to practice their knowledge of 3D shapes through the creation of our Kindergarten 3D Shape Museum. Students were able to bring students from other grades through our 3D Shape Museum and talk about what shapes we displayed.

The PM class had an amazing time on our field trip to the Calgary Farmyard! Thank you so much to our amazing parent volunteers. We couldn't have done it without you!

Week of May 19-22

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began the week by meeting our 4 new duckling friends. We also saw how much the chicks have grown, as well as our gosling since last week. We talked about how each animal is different and what makes them the same. Say hello to our sweet ducklings!

We then worked in groups to build a barn that fit an animal by using different building materials. Students worked in groups of 3-4 using materials such as magnet tiles, foam blocks, small building blocks, etc. Mrs. Bitz took pictures of each group's barns so that students could label different parts of their barns. 

The AM Class went on our Field Trip to the Calgary Farmyard. We had so much fun exploring the farmyard and visiting with all sorts of baby animals. Many thanks for our wonderful parent volunteers who came on our field trip and made it such a memorable experience.

Week of May 11-14

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about our very last letter of the alphabet - the letter X. We listened to an X story and practiced printing the letter X in our fine motor journal. 

We also used our letter-sound knowledge to make Letter Island maps. We were given a letter of the alphabet to brainstorm different words that began with that letter to draw a picture and label those words. 

During table centres this week, students engaged in a variety of loose parts to create different scenarios to play with bugs and little animals. Students used their imaginations to create stories while they were playing with peers to go along with what they built.

We also had lots of opportunities to play with our chickens and our goose, Johnny Marshmallow. They have been a fan favourite in kindergarten!

Week of May 4-8

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began the week learning about the letter Q and the sound it makes by reading a Q story. We also practiced printing the letter Q by working on a letter Q Write the Room.

We also began our learning about 3D shapes through reading a story, listening to a 3D shape song and going on a 3D shape hunt. We also worked on a 3D shape sort.

Kindergartens worked hard on creating a special Mother's Day surprise for all our special moms out there. We hope you loved their art and sweet messages. Happy Mother's Day!

Upcoming Field Trips:

Kindergarten students will be taking a field trip to the Calgary Farmyard in May. We are still looking for volunteers for this field trip! If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to have completed a police clearance prior to the date. Please send Mrs. Bitz an email if you are interested in volunteering at kebitz@cbe.ab.ca. The dates are as below.
