Week of May 11-14

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about our very last letter of the alphabet - the letter X. We listened to an X story and practiced printing the letter X in our fine motor journal.

We also used our letter-sound knowledge to make Letter Island maps. We were given a letter of the alphabet to brainstorm different words that began with that letter to draw a picture and label those words.

During table centres this week, students engaged in a variety of loose parts to create different scenarios to play with bugs and little animals. Students used their imaginations to create stories while they were playing with peers to go along with what they built.

We also had lots of opportunities to play with our chickens and our goose, Johnny Marshmallow. They have been a fan favourite in kindergarten!

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began the week learning about the letter Q and the sound it makes by reading a Q story. We also practiced printing the letter Q by working on a letter Q Write the Room.

We also began our learning about 3D shapes through reading a story, listening to a 3D shape song and going on a 3D shape hunt. We also worked on a 3D shape sort.

Kindergartens worked hard on creating a special Mother's Day surprise for all our special moms out there. We hope you loved their art and sweet messages. Happy Mother's Day!

Week of April 25-May 1

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about the letter Z and the sound it makes. We read a Z Story and practiced writing our letter Zz in our fine motor journal. We worked hard on making diaganol lines as this skill was quite tricky for many kinders.

Next, we continued our learning about the 5 Senses by participating in a taste test. We tested lemons (sour), Skittles (sweet), Bakers Chocolate (bitter) and pretzels (salty). We tracked which ones we thought were good or bad in a chart and then circled our favourite one! Ask me which one I liked best.

We then got a chance to see our class eggs that will be ready to hatch in the coming days. We read a story about what animals hatch from eggs and made some predictions about what could be in the eggs by completing drawing and writing activity.

We also read the story Dear Zoo and made our own dear zoo pages for a class book!

Week of April 20-23

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about the letter Y and the sound it makes. We read a story about a yak, practiced making upper and lower case Ys in our fine motor journals and learned how to draw a yak using a capital Y.

We continued our learning about the letter Y by engaging in a Letter Y Write the Room. Y words and pictures were posted around the classroom. Students had to find those words, copy them down and draw a picture to go with it.

Happy Earth Day! On Wednesday we learned about the importance of Earth Day and ways we can protect our planet. Students completed an activity in their visual journal about things they can do to protect the earth. Ask me about some ways we can protect our planet. Every student also made their own earth from plasticine which worked on fine motor skills.

We finished our week  by learning about the sense of smell. We watched a short video about how our nose works and how it helps us smell. We also read a story called Yummy Yucky and did a scratch and sniff sticker activity in our visual journal where we decided which smells were yummy and which ones were yucky.

We also got to watch Grade 2s and 3s do their dress rehearsal for their concert. We had a great time watching and listening to all the amazing songs they have been learning.

Week of April 13-17

This week in Kindergarten...

We began the week learning about the letter J and the sound it makes. We read a story, drew pictures of things that begin with J as well as practiced our labelling skills by labelling our pictures. We also made Jellyfish!

We continued our work on patterns by participating in our Great Jellybean Pattern Challenge! Students extended jellybean patterns, labelled their patterns and found the core. For each one they completed, they moved onto the next level of difficulty! It was so fun to see students rise to the challenge.

We practiced making our own patterns on whiteboards with pattern blocks. We labelled them and found the core. We are working hard at creating more complex patterns such as AAB, ABC and ABBC patterns.

We then created our own Jewel Patterns by creating our own pattern, having it repeat 3 times, labelling the pattern and finding the core.

For our work in the 5 Senses, we moved on to our sense of hearing. We played a game where a sound was played and we had to guess what it was by drawing a picture of our guess and identifying the first letter our guess begins with. Ask me what sounds I heard and if my scientific predictions were correct!

Week of April 6-10

 This week in Kindergarten...

We began our week learning about the letter "R" and the sound it makes. We brainstormed words that begin with the letter R and clapped how many syllables each word has. We also drew and painted robins using the capital letter R. We are hoping for signs of spring to happen!

We then began learning about our 5 Senses in Science. We checked out items in a mystery box using our 5 senses. We also read a story and did a short activity in our visual journal that identified our 5 senses.

To continue our 5 senses learning we next focused on touch. We played a game in the classroom trying to find items that were rough, smooth, hard, bumpy and so on. We also read a story and also created Touchy-Feely pages in our visual journal using different materials such as pipe cleaners, bubble wrap, felt, etc. We then identified descriptive words that went with each piece of material and recorded it.

We continued our learning about our 5 Senses and spring with some writing in our visual journal using the

Week of March 30-April 2

This week in Kindergarten...

I hope everyone had a lovely spring break! We began our week with our Pancake Breakfast. What a wonderful way to begin our first day back after spring break.

This week we learned about the letter "E" and the two sounds an E makes. We learned how to print an upper and lower case E. We learned how to draw an elephant and labelled it. Ask me about what words begin with the letter E.

In math, we continued learning about patterns - this time creating an ABC pattern using different pattern elements such as lines and shapes on Easter Eggs.

We also practiced our 1:1 counting skills by doing a Count the Room Easter activity.
